Common Causes of Hair Loss Among Men and Women

Hair loss is a significant concern for many men and women, and determining the underlying reason is the first step in finding the most appropriate treatment. The most common causes of hair loss are linked to genetics, aging, medical conditions, and certain medications. Excessive hair loss can impact your self-confidence and make you appear older than you are. Dr. Joseph Galitzin and his team at Skin Care at 5th Ave. in Peachtree City, GA, are dedicated to providing minimally invasive hair restoration treatment. If you are ready to rejuvenate your appearance, we can evaluate your unique condition, pinpoint the cause of thinning or balding, and discuss your treatment options.

Most individuals who experience hair loss have a genetic predisposition, though medications, lifestyle factors, and certain medical conditions can also produce similar effects.

Signs of Hair Loss

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people lose approximately 50 to 100 hairs per day. However, certain symptoms may indicate that you are losing an excessive amount of hair, including:

  • Excessive thinning at the top of your head
  • Patchy bald spots across your scalp
  • Hair loss throughout your body
  • Loose hair

If you notice any of these symptoms, visit your doctor. They can perform a medical health evaluation to help determine the cause of your hair loss.

The Most Common Cause: Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as hereditary hair loss, accounts for more than 95 percent of hair loss in men. The condition, also known as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness, affects more than 80 million American men and women.

During a consultation, Dr. Galitzin will assess the cause of your hair loss and discuss how the ARTAS Robotic System can help restore your appearance and confidence.

Contrary to popular belief, hair loss is not genetically passed on by your maternal grandfather. Even if there is no history of hair loss in your family, you can still be susceptible. Balding and hair loss can begin as early as puberty but are most prevalent later in life.

Androgenetic alopecia is hereditary and develops when hair follicles at the top and front of the head become sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This causes the hair to deteriorate or thin over time until it eventually becomes dormant. Although the front and top of the head are most commonly affected by male pattern baldness, the hair at the sides and back of the head can also grow weaker and more fine over time.

Other Causes of Hair Loss

Although it is most evident in men, hair loss can also affect women and children. In addition to male or female-pattern baldness, the most common causes of hair loss include:

  • Changes in your hormones during puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause
  • Certain medical conditions such as immune system disorders, scalp infections, lupus, diabetes, anemia, physical or emotional stress, and thyroid problems
  • Medications or drugs used to treat cancer, depression, high blood pressure, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy
  • Other factors such as trichotillomania, poor nutrition, protein deficiency, and low vitamin levels

If your hair loss is being caused by a medical condition, your doctor may be able to provide medication to offset your hair loss. Switching medications can help if thinning is a side effect of a drug you are taking. There are also certain measures you can take at home to keep your hair healthy. Although certain causes of hair loss cannot be prevented, good hygiene and proper nutrition can help you maintain thick, strong hair.
